Student playing pool in our Recreation Center

Center Life

A typical day at South Bronx Job Corps is full of activities to help our students prepare for the real world. Students get up early and spend the majority of their day receiving academic and hands-on career technical training.

After class, students study or hang out with friends before dinner in the cafeteria. After dinner, students may do chores in their dorms or spend their downtime studying. Most students are in bed by 10 PM in order to rest for the next day's tasks.

Recreation

South Bronx Job Corps boasts one of the best recreation programs in the nation. Students find our recreational activities to be a fun and exciting way to meet new friends, socialize, and just relax and unwind at the end of the day. Some of the activities we offer are:

  • Arts and crafts
  • Card games
  • Board games
  • Intramural sports
  • Physical fitness
  • Table games
  • Varsity sports

We also sponsor trips to bowling alleys, movie theaters, museums, concerts, professional sports games, and other attractions located in the New York City area.

Special Events

Throughout the year, we have special cultural and social events such as:

  • Dances
  • Family Days and Fun Days
  • Fashion shows
  • Picnics
  • Summer Barbecue
  • Talent shows
  • Varsity sports

Community Volunteer and Support Activities

Our students are provided with many opportunities to develop their leadership, employment, and social skills as they give back to the local community. These events and activities include river clean-ups, community works projects, fund raising events, parades, local school activities, the Upstate Home for Children, and the Special Olympics.

Trainee Management Team (TMT)

The Trainee Management Team (TMT) is the voice of our students and is very involved in the operation of the center. All of our students are encouraged to join the TMT.

The TMT is composed of Executive Board officers and Residence Hall Leadership Board (Honor Corps). The Executive Board members are the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Sergeant-At-Arms, and Community Relations Officer. The Residence Hall Leadership Board is made of all student leaders from each dormitory on center.

A student in good standing, who has been at the center for at least 60 days, may be elected as an Executive Board officer. Executive Board officers are elected by the entire South Bronx Job Corps student body.

Safety

Job Corps is committed to offering all students a safe and secure environment. That's why we have a Zero Tolerance Policy for violence, alcohol, and drugs. Any student who breaks this policy will be dismissed immediately from Job Corps.
