Academic Training Overview

Academic Training Overview

In addition to career training, South Bronx Job Corps Center also provides academic training, including basic reading and math. Courses in independent living, employability skills, and career success skills are offered to help students transition into the workplace. We also have several academic programs to help our students achieve their full potential.

Academic Programs

Job Corps provides a very structured environment that will prepare you for the workplace.

High School Equivalency Diploma (HSE)

One of our top goals at South Bronx Job Corps is to ensure that every qualified student obtains his or her HSE diploma prior to leaving the center. Students who don't already have a high school diploma upon their arrival at South Bronx and are between the ages of 17 1/5 through 21 years old will be enrolled automatically in our HSE program offered with the assistance of the Department of Education (DOE). Students over the age of 21 years old will be offered our High School Diploma on-line (Penn Foster) program.

Tutoring programs are available where students are tutored in applied academics, math, reading, social studies, and writing by instructors or by fellow students (Peer Student Tutors). Students interested in getting into a tutoring program may contact their instructors or the Academic Manager.

Advanced Career Training

The Advanced Career Training (ACT) program gives students the opportunity to receive advanced education/technical training. Students in the ACT program may attend one of the participating City University of New York (CUNY) schools. ACT students may also participate in other Job Corps center programs such as A+/Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification at Edison Job Corps [HYPERLINK TO] in New Jersey, Advanced Computer Technology at Shriver Job Corps [HYPERLINK TO] in Massachusetts, and Advanced Pastry Training at New Haven Job Corps [HYPERLINK TO] in Connecticut. To qualify for this program, a student must have a high school diploma or GED (from our center or another educational facility) and have successfully completed a vocational trade at Job Corps. Benefits of the ACT Program include: • academic advisement, mentoring, and tutoring • paid tuition, fees, books, and supplies • housing and recreation • meals provided by Job Corps, on-and-off center • transportation to and from college of choice This program is offered through partnerships with the ABC Training Center, Bronx Community College, Bronx Educational Opportunity Center, and CUNY Colleges.

English Language Learning Program

Students needing to learn English can enter our English Language Learning (ELL) program. Students in the ELL program are tested regularly to determine their language proficiency levels.

Driver Education

Driver's Education is available to all students needing their driver's license.

Career Success Standards (CSS)

Behavioral expectations in the areas of employability, social development, and independent living skills

The way we prepare you for the workforce has changed during Job Corps' 50 years. The growth of new technology, its impact on your education and the workplace, and the surge in various high-growth industries continuously creates new opportunities to learn and grow. Job Corps is responding to this opportunity with the Career Success Standards, a set of ten behavioral expectations in the areas of employability, social development, and independent living skills.
